Math, data analysis, graphing, research, reading comprehension, cause and effect, expository writing, opinion writing, biographies, arts and crafts. This 35 page unit is truly trans-disciplinary.This complete unit of inquiry focuses on the central idea of how revolutions and revolutionaries across the globe and history have influenced society and our thinking today. Through the key concepts of change, causation, perspective and connection, the children are able to find the answers to their inquiries through these lines of inquiry built into this packet. We begin with the American Revolution and connect it to a variety of famous and infamous revolutionaries throughout history; Susan B. Anthony, Joan of Arc, Che Guevera, Adolf Hitler etc. The list could be endless. The activities are inquiry based, rigorous and interactive, thus engaging the children in all aspects of their learning. I have designed this unit of inquiry with my 5th graders in mind. It can of course be adapted to suit 3rd, 4th and 6th grades too. The unit culminates with a summative assessment where the children prepare their own wax museum character. The checklist is included to show the key concepts we focus on together with what proficient would look like. This is such a fun inquiry and one of my favorites.
