A protester, activist, briefly a conscientious objector, Neugeboren has been a part of all that's happened and withdrew from it (with his wife Betsey—a painter) to Spéracèdes in the south of France. There he experienced the ideal pastoral-communal life with other artists and writers but finally realized he could not altogether retreat from engagement or repudiate America.
