Three children—Phoenix, Jade and Choy—are born into a privileged family in early twentieth-century China, each destined to face a dramatic struggle for survival. Set against the backdrop of political instability and war, The Dragon Phoenix Bracelet follows the fortunes of the siblings as they try to negotiate life in a violent and unpredictable society.
When Phoenix marries, her father gives her a valuable gold bracelet as part of her dowry. As life becomes hard and money is scarce, the bracelet leaves the family's possession, its disappearance shrouded in lies and misunderstanding. Many years later, when Phoenix dies, she leaves her granddaughter June a vital clue. June visits the ancestral village in mainland China in the hope of solving the mystery and fulfilling her beloved grandmother's wishes. The Dragon Phoenix Bracelet is a poignant depiction of a divided family, combined with a fascinating insight into the culture and volatile political history of twentieth-century China.
