Prequel to A Drum Is Empty, this short story is narrated by one of the secondary characters. Kewarratiwa flees into the night while her family is slaughtered by the "tall folk." After days of wandering, with little food and water, fearful of encountering more of the hostile tribe, she is found by one of them, and discovers that they are not all the same.
