The northern right whale is an endangered mammal. It is thought there are only around 300 of its species left at this time. This story is based on a true account.
In early December 1994, a 30 foot northern right whale, thought to be around four years old, lost its ocean-going bearings and wandered off course into a river, making its way as far north as Philadelphia. The whale traveled the Delaware River and Bay for more than ten days, being spotted near the Salem Nuclear Generating Station in New Jersey and in the Christina River near the Port of Wilmington.
Scientists, the Coast Guard, local media and concerned citizens tracked the whale’s progress daily and used their superior human efforts in order to coax the whale back toward the open sea.
The last sighting of this whale left no doubt that she had found her way back to the ocean and, hopefully, to her pod.
Many of us believe, however, that the following story is the true account of how "Winnie, the lost right whale" really found her way out of the river...
