PB n' J, and Roger are inseparable. Phoebe and J's relationship is complex. Roger quarrels with J, and then meets Gloria. J spends more time with Marvin and Harold, while Phoebe sees more of Kate. Roger and Gloria grow intimate together.Gloria and her father, Ed Cost, have been developing a fresh approach to education, a little father/daughter time, suggested to them by their family psychologist, Dr. Bills. Gloria's mother, Felicia, is Head of the School Board, and a savvy businesswoman, dealing in tobacco and coffee. Gloria's maternal grandfather is a local patriarch; Head of the Bureau, which is a position for life. It appears that Felicia will inherit this position of power when Grandpa dies.Gloria and Ed present their proposal, The Three Pillars of Child Centered Education, to Felicia and Dr. BIlls, but their fresh approach is shot down. Felicia has plans of her own. Gloria is sent to the countryside to live with her grandparents. Ed disappears.Roger eventually follows after Gloria. The two of them enjoy the springtime, and a ceremonial rite of passage.Phoebe and J's relationship reaches rock bottom. J turns toward self destruction and arson. The community as a whole is moved toward uprising with word of the patriarch's death. Faced with a difficult challenge, Felicia's heart softens, and she moves to support Gloria and Ed's fresh approach to education. Her father on his death bed wished it be so. Child Centered Education is reassessed for its merits, and a summer program is begun. Our teen protagonists, Phoebe and Kate, etc. set off to lead the new summer program. This narrative is developed out of personal journals, and other writing from my life as a teenager. -KK
