The story revolves around the conflicting loves and lives of Gudrun and Ursula, the Brangwen sisters.
Gudrun happens to be an artist. She has a destructive relationship with Gerald Crich, who happens to be an industrialist.
On the other hand, Ursula loves Rupert Birkin, who is an intellectual. He remains alienated and he presents many views related to the author.
The author contrasts the love of these two pairs. The tension mounts in the story when Gerald and Rupert are physically and psychologically attracted to each other.
