The story revolves around a young girl. She makes a mistaken accusation but as she grows up she realizes her mistake and regrets, desiring atonement. This experience takes that girl into an exploration of the nature of writing for this purpose.
"Atonement" is considered as one of the best works of McEwan. It was the most successful and popular novel of its time. It was highly celebrated and honoured by a large section of readers and critics.
The book was nominated for the Booker Prize for fiction in 2001. The TIME magazine included "Atonement" in its list of All Time Best 100 Greatest Novels.
