Attorney Michael Connelly lives in the small lakeside community of Excelsior, Minnesota. He's perfectly content with his mundane life until he attends a nighttime street dance for his high school reunion, where he chances to meet his old high school sweetheart. She is married, and he is not, and the magic between them remains alive. From that moment forward Michael's life slowly tumbles into chaos. Following a brief fling with his former girlfriend, he nearly loses his life while rushing into a burning building to save a man. Then the drama continues when he stumbles onto a scheme involving nationwide art fraud. He subsequently is caught up in multiple murders, which only he seems capable of solving. By the time everything is finally sorted out, Michael's life has been turned upside down, and he is left alone and disillusioned.
