'Stephen Hero' is the first draft of the work which was to be published eventually as 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' Its survival is due to the quick action of his sister, Eileen, who rescued it from the fire where it was thrown by the author during a crisis It differs substantially from 'Portrait' and includes characters and incidents omitted from the later work and is a novel in its own right
