Adrienne and her friend Frieda attend the opera Tännhauser at the San Francisco opera house. After the opera is over they exit together. It is a hot sultry night and on a frivolous impulse they take off their clothes and put them in the saddlebags of their bicycles and ride throughout San Francisco. Sergeant Murphy stops them but since it's not in the book, "It's their constitutional right."
