Seth M. Azria opens the volume with an evaluation of communism and the challenges faced by nations once under
communist rule. Azria also collaborates with Jonathan Christiansen in discussing the economic nuances of socialism.
According to the authors, “socialism offered an alternative that promised to erase the class conflict and social problems
that appeared to be a direct result of the prevailing capitalist system.” In contrast to socialism, Azria turns to the
economic system of capitalism and seeks to answer what degree of freedom global economies should have. Francis
Duffy transitions the volume’s focus to the topic of capitalism and its four distinct types that have been developing for
over 200 years: family, managerial, institutional, and welfare. Sherry Thompson also discusses corporate responsibility,
noting that people may be skeptical about corporate community involvement, but they must consider the history
of corporations and how they evolved in American society. However, P.D. Casteel’s work on the rise of multinational
corporations points out the major transformations made by all kinds of American companies, from small businesses
with community obligations to multinational corporations serving only the interests of their investors. Michael P.
Auerbach builds off this international theme by discussing the idea of the global economy and some of its twenty-firstcentury
societal and economic implications.
