This volume begins with a broad essay by Michael Erbschloe in which he analyzes the ideas of public sociologist Michael Burawoy and offers insight on the challenges commonly faced by public sociologists with regard to making their research widely known. Following Erbschloe’s essay is a series of essays focusing on United States policy reform. The first of these, written by Ruth A. Wienclaw, explores public education reform and illustrates the evolution of the United States education system.. The next reform essay by Jeff Klassen discusses the efforts made to achieve comprehensive immigration reform, but also notes that in the United States, “the most notable identifiable trend is that little has changed since around 1965.” The final reform-centered essay provides discourse on the healthcare system and the nuances of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act that passed during the Clinton administration.
