The collection begins with Sally A. Coppus’s outline of the extracurricular activities and programs that serve to keep
students safe during non-school hours and to provide students with increased academic, social, and recreational opportunities.
School enrichment activities can also enhance a student’s learning experience by connecting ideas from the
curricular atmosphere to the real-world. School field trips, a common occurrence in most schools, can actively involve
the student in the curriculum and generate interest in a subject while providing a fresh and exciting learning environment.
Merritt then looks at elective courses, which offer students an with increased flexibility with the curriculum and
the freedom to pursue their own interests. However, Merritt argues that these programs are often misunderstood or
underappreciated and therefore are at risk of being dropped from the curriculum altogether due to budgetary pressures.
John Loeser describes the array of exchange programs offered through schools that aim to increase student awareness
of and respect for different cultures. Loeser provides practical suggestions for implementing a successful exchange
program in a public school. Oftentimes, students seek to be challenged academically outside the set curriculum, and
advanced placement programs help to give these students a chance to participate in college-level courses and receive
college credit.
