The collection begins with an overview of public school security and the efforts schools make to maintain a safe
environment. Matt Donnelly provides statistics on the rates of school-related violent crime, and Christopher Poradish
discusses strategies for “evaluating, developing, financing, and implementing effective and age-appropriate violent
prevention measures” in schools. Donnelly then reviews the presence of weapons in U.S. public schools and examines
some of the reasons behind the decreased volume of weapons brought into schools throughout the past decade. Conflict
mediation curricula and zero tolerance policies are then discussed and evaluated for their efficacy and impact. While
most teachers and administrators become adept at handling student conflicts before they escalate or become violent,
schools must be prepared with a practical crisis management plan to deal with any emergencies. Jennifer Bouchard
discusses the necessary components of an effective crisis management plan, including the prevention, response, and
recovery strategies that work best. Bullying, hazing, and student gags are examples of other potentially violent behavior
that schools must be able to address and control.
