This volume begins with an essay by John D. Benson that focuses on the best methods for motivating employees within an organization and for navigating an organization through times of change. The presented theories for employee motivation include those based on needs, process, and reinforcement. Benson also offers a number of change management models and productivity maintenance ideas before Simone I. Flynn discusses the management of innovation. While Flynn details the main types of innovation, the trajectory of innovation, and the history of innovation, he also provides a case study of Boeing’s formalized innovation program and how the organization effectively manages innovation on an large scale. Managers must also be able to enact sound marketing techniques for newly developed products and to understand when previous innovations become obsolete. Many managers are also responsible for managing logistics and supply chains. In addition to maintaining sound logistical practices, managers also need to insure the correct timing and availability of resources. To do so, and as outlined by Michael Erbschloe, organizations seek to work with optimal and maximum operational velocity. Further, in order to operate with a smooth production flow, organizations need to keep adequate amounts of resources in on hand. Successful management of technology can help managers implement proper logistic and resource management procedures. However, in addition to effectively managing technology, Marlanda English notes that “managers of technology must [also] guide organizations and staff in identifying problems, designing solutions, evaluation solutions, implementing selected solutions, and closely monitoring results.”
