This volume begins with an essay by Fred Westmark that overviews the wide-ranging business activities bestowed
upon human resource departments. Among these are initiating employment activities, fostering employee development,
and adhering to legal guidelines. As noted by Ruth A. Wienclaw, human resource departments also play a
significant role in ensuring success in high-performing organizations. This is the case due to the departments hiring
new, qualified employees, monitoring employee performance, and providing trainings to employees as a means for
them to foster their skills. Vanessa A. Tetteh builds off Wienclaw’s ideas in that she stresses that “the management of
human resources is no longer restricted to a single department; it is now a shared responsibility across organizations.”
As a result of this philosophy, many organizations now incorporate human resource policies and practices in their
business strategies.
