I had never seen loose bricks before and now I had to become an overnight brick mason. I thought about the wall all day as I mowed lawns and sort of got a little enthusiasm for the project. I was sort of flattered that mom thought I could do it. I decided to start the next day. After all how long could it take?I worked myself to death all summer long on that damn wall. It was like being on a prison road gang. I worked four or five hours each day in the hot sun praying for rain. When I wasn't working on the wall I was mowing my lawns. At least I got paid for mowing them. I got tired of hearing mom say, "Get out there and work on your wall". She said it over and over every day. My wall, my wall, it wasn't my wall, it was her damn wall.
