Harris Channing had beautiful fair skin, hair as black as shining coal, and a strong willed spirit. He had a bright future in the New World, if he could live through the first winter but he was determined to survive as he was stubborn.
In the first winters in the New World, the pilgrims were often unprepared for the harsh winter and many died. While out hunting, Harris Channing found an odd mound that had a basket of buried corn seed. He didn't care to whom it belonged, or why it might be there, just that it meant food for him and his people.
Sly Fox was the Indian that caught Harris in the act of stealing. This was the seed Sly Fox had set aside for the Spring planting. He was amazed at the audacity of the young man trying to steal his corn, but because he was fascinated with his soft white skin and dark green eyes, he presented a fair trade. In payment for his debt, the pilgrim could share his body or something equally as interesting.
