Virginia Perkins is a ghost trapped in Gettysburg who meets a historian who is researching his family's past. He quickly learns this woman is part of his past. She tells him the story of how she help free his ancestors and took them to Canada. They become friends and he soon helps her reunite with her husband, and her dear friend who is also his ancestor. The story is an adventure through this time and the past and a look at the ugliness of the civil war.
