The essay deals with perception in five chapters. It opens with a brief preface highlighting the basic subject. Chapter 1 deals with problems in physical perception and how these can define our impressions. Chapter 2 deals with promises between others and to ourselves. Intent influences the validity of promises and whether we have lied to others and to ourselves. Chapter 3 deals with the nature of personality and acting out our behavioral intents. Harvey Keitel's persona is borrowed for a small fictional dramatic skit covering aspects of the question. Chapter 4 covers the question of what we know about other sentient beings, what we can be sure of and what not sure of. Chapter 5 deals with the nature of existence and posits that the position of the atheist and mystic amount to the same thing. Whether you view the soul as mortal or immortal, the relationship of the soul is the same against the backdrop of existence. The author deems these questions important to everyone, including and especially children. The cover image has a childlike quality in view of this intent.
