Ben loves his 'magic machines, only he wished his toys had real engines. And when he awakens in the night, craving a midnight snack, such machines would sorely come in handy, for Ben appears to have shrunk in the night. With everything posing an obstacle, Ben wished he had a glider to float him from the edge of his bed, or a fire engine to hoist him up to the top shelf. But Ben must use his resources to negotiate the large proportions of his surroundings without such engines.

With colour illustrations throughout, completed in oils, the story provides a visual feast for young children.
