Research from around the world confirms that both substance misuse and mental disorder play a significant role in the abuse and neglect of children. However, this does not mean that all parents with substance misuse and/or mental health problems are bad parents. Analysis of child protection registers and series case reviews of the deaths of children who are abused or neglected highlight the inter-relationship between domestic violence, mental ill health and substance misuse.
