In the 1850s, a gold rush was underway in the colonies of New South Wales and Victoria. On the goldfields of Ballarat tensions were building. Miners were fed up with unlawful police actions and the huge licence fees they had to pay for the right to mine gold. In December 1854 the miners burned their licences and built a stockade around the Eureka diggings.
