Just before dawn on 25 April 1915, men of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps tried to land on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. Many were killed by snipers before they reached the beach. Thousands got ashore and dug in for the terrible campaign ahead. More than 8700 Australians and 2700 New Zealanders lost their lives in the next eight months and many more were wounded.
