Jule Verne and H.G. Wells are just young kids when they first meet in Paris. They become fast friends, sharing their tales of adventure as they mature into young men, and their excitement about the vastness of the universe.

Then one day they notice strange things begin happening. Soldiers march off and never return. There's some kind of underwater battle going on in the Channel. Parents march off to war and never send another word back.

Wells is shocked from his immobilization when he is attacked by an Invader, a vehicle of some kind that uses a Heat Ray to destroy everything and everyone.
