In the American Civil War soldiers joined up and fought in regiments with family and friends. Men went into battle surrounded by fellows they knew, trusted and loved. But the weapons of modern warfare created horrendous casualties. In battles like Shiloh, which is depicted in this story, some units lost a third of their men. Survivors stayed to fight because they didn't want people back home to hear they had shirked duty. Men saw brothers fall and continued to fight.
