Aschenbach, a German writer, travels to Venice to get a change of scene, for he has a writer's block and he is desperately in need of inspiration. He happens to be a self-disciplined, respected, and successful writer who pays a lot of importance to purity of art and aestheticism.

His experiences in Venice change everything very dramatically. He sees an adolescent boy at the hotel where he takes a suite. The boy is extremely beautiful, like a Greek sculpture.

Aschenbach initially believes that he has pure aesthetic interest in that boy, but over the time and certain experiences in that city he sheds his morality and self-discipline, leading him to his decline and ultimate death.
