The play revolves around a family consisting of an elderly professor and his glamorous young wife, Yelena, who happens to be much younger than the professor. They visit the rural estate that supports their urban lifestyle. Before that the husband and wife had been living in city.

Vanya and Astrov happen to be two friends. Vanya is the brother of the Professor's late first wife, and Astrov is a local doctor. Both of them are highly attracted towards Yelena, in fact, they are simply mesmerized by her spell.
