Sergei Yesenin (October 3, 1895 – December 28, 1925) was one of the most popular and loved poets of the 20th century. Born in a peasant family, he adored the countryside and much of his poetry is his attempt to capture the beauty of nature. Because of its simplicity, his poetry was accessible even to the common man. Suffering from mental instability and depression, Yesenin committed suicide by hanging himself at the Hotel d'Angleterre. He was 30 years old. To this day, his work remains widely popular in Russian, where it is a part of school curriculum. Many of his poems were set to music and became beloved songs.
