Mary Kate McKenzie adores her work with troubled teenagers at Eden's Gate in rural Ohio, but her youthful idealism isn't always as effective as she wishes. Then a near-fatal knock on the head shatters her rose-colored glasses. She awakens, a stranger in her own body.

The starry-eyed young woman, who had planned to devote her life to the Eden's Gate religious community, suddenly transforms into an outspoken, take-no-prisoners dynamo who avoids all sentiment and religion.

Despite this, or because of it, Mary Kate manages to capture the attention and respect of her teenage charges. But Mary Kate's mind is elsewhere. She has other more important struggles. She has absolutely no memory of her former self. She only knows that she's pregnant—with no memory of how she got that way.

When former broadcast journalist Charles Casey arrives to do an article on the center for the local newspaper, his presence begins to unlock memories—but of whose life? And since Casey claims never to have met her before, why does being with him feel familiar and right?

As the brand new Mary Kate continues to unfold, she is determined to find the key to her past. As she and the teenagers plan and plant a community garden, she searches for the man who planted his seed inside her. Whose child is she carrying? Will the father step forward when her pregnancy becomes obvious, or does he pray she never regains her memory?

As she searches, and as Casey and the work of the center become real, even vital to her, she finds herself faced with a choice: should she move toward an excitingly different life suddenly offered to her, or can she be happy in the quiet world of Eden's Gate, with the troubled kids she's learned to love, her own son or daughter, and Casey by her side?
