This story begins with a people, a loyal people who gave up all for Mother Church. Originally from France, the eldest daughter of the Church, till today they hold on to that heritage which made them great. Through over 300 years of persecution and bloodshed, the French Canadians have remained faithful to their Jesus, Mary and the Church.
This is more than a story of a Saint; it is the story of faith, determination, and zeal; it is the story of our Church. Our story begins in Cap de la Madeleine, once called "a sandy mound not fit for man or beast." This was man's poor assessment; God would show them that as a flower can bloom in the desert, a seed sown by men of faith can bring forth a jewel in a "worthless sandy mound." Here man, with little but faith, would bring to the North American continent a grand and magnificent Shrine, where hope and healings and consolation would be just some of the gifts received by the millions who come and venerate the Mother of God under the title of Our Lady of the Cape or as the French Canadians say, Notre-Dame du Cap.
