This book consists of three original plays written for primary school students to read, discuss and perform. Each play has an underpinning 'value' to be explored.
The Cantankerous Caterpillar explores resistance to change, death, grief, sorrow, loss, new life, transformation, acceptance, lasting love, communication, emotion and humour. Students gain an understanding of the purpose of change and growth in their lives. The play is written entirely in verse, reinforcing the beat and the pulse of life.
Herbert the Friendly Ogre explores the issues of bullying and peer pressure. It raises questions of individuality, standing up for your beliefs, trusting intuition, antisocial behaviour and passive resistance. Students gain insight into the importance of being responsible for one's own actions.
It's So Hard to Be Perfect looks at the relationship between eight-year-old Samson and his grandfather. Issues raised include trying your best, learning from mistakes, acceptance, the importance of family relationships and self-esteem. Students learn that we all make mistakes and that we can learn from these mistakes.
One-page introductions describe the values inherent in the plot, skills to be learnt and writing styles to be discussed. There are simple preparation instructions, performance ideas and follow-up activities.
