Lighting Mathematical Fires 2 is the sequel to Lighting Mathematical Fires by the same authors. It aims to provide stimulating material for students in years 2 to 8 in the form of a series of problems. Some of these problems are really investigations or explorations as they develop through a number of stages involving extensions of the original problems.

These extensions allow problems to be tackled by students of differing ages and abilities as well as giving students the chance to understand the way research mathematicians think. This also means that problems do not have to be completed in a single session; teachers may choose to come back later in the year as students' knowledge develops.

Divided into five chapters, this book covers: the basics of mathematics, activity problems, number and algebra, measurement and geometry, statistics and probability. It begins by setting out the aims and objectives of the book, as well as discussing the authors' view of mathematics. It then moves on to a number of problems where students can get really involved by playing characters to solve the problems (a kinaesthetic approach). The remainder of the book focusses on problems based on the three content strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics.
