Tarl is a young soldier returnimg from the Viet Nam war. He hitches a ride from a family who is driving across the country. Tarl meets the timid wheelchair bound Cassie who a few months earlier was raped and beaten and left for dead. Cassie is traveling to LA to have an operation so she can walk again.
On the trip to LA tarl and Cassie fall deeply in love. Tarl promises Cassie he will be with her when she is operated on but he gets hit by a car and loses his memory.He is in the hospital for months and doesn't know who she is but each night he dreams about a beautiful girl in a wheelchair. It is just by chance he sees a picture of Cassie on the news on television. Cassie has been kidnapped and Tarl goes to find her before he loses the only thing in his life that he can remember.
