Aidan Conner is an American photojournalist who turns up on the Tokyo doorstep of his old college friend, Mima Sasaki. Burned out after a disastrous assignment and resulting political intrigue, Aidan seeks to remake himself.

He finds that Mima, while a successful artist still struggles with her past, which soon becomes present. Aidan also learns her closest friends, Sora and Eko labor under the label, "parasite single." The inference is, both women are among those who stay home and live their lives while sponging off their parents.

Aidan knows well that everyone has a story: Sora, a brilliant painter battles mental illness. Eko, who seems the poster child for the term, has a dark past of her own.

Through her friends and the recollections of Mima's old love, Aidan is reminded of what kept he and Mima close over the years and miles. One thing never dies.
