Robert W. Jernigan, an Area-Vice President, for the Postal Service, worked sixteen hour days, manipulated superiors and subordinates, lied, cheated, and did anything necessary to make it to the top. Now days away from being named the next Postmaster General a letter arrives threatening to derail his promotion. At the same time a letter is sent to Rachel Lockhart, a reporter for the Arizona Journal promising her a big story at the Silverton Post Office, one of Jernigan's offices. Rachel meets Jack Powell, a supervisor at the Silverton Post Office, and they are drawn to the mystery and to each other as people start disappearing from the Silverton office. When the third person vanishes the FBI gets involved and Jack gets suspended for helping Rachel. Together they follow the evidence to a ranch near Brookside, Wyoming where they encounter the shocking truth, and then it gets worse. Lance Rickner, Jernigan's henchman shows up armed and ready to do anything to protect his boss.
