In the early 19th century, a farmer's son in the Bavarian Rhineland travels to Cleveland to apprentice to a blacksmith. Michael Harm struggles through his indenture with a cruel master to receive his freedom dues just as civil war threatens the country he now calls home. However, it is Cleveland's post-war Gilded Age that presents the greatest challenge to Michael's artisan way of life.
