Kidnapped follows the travels of the young David Balfour in the year 1751. His mother and father now both dead, he leaves his home village and heads to Crammond on the outskirts of Edinburgh to meet his uncle Ebenezer at the House of Shaws, where he hopes to start to make his way in life. Here, however, things turn unsavoury as his uncle betrays their family connections and David is taken forcibly aboard a brig bound for the Carolinas, and is destined for a life of slavery. His luck changes when he meets Alan Breck Stewart, a Jacobite, hunted by King George’s troops, whose boat they hit on the voyage. Thrown together on a brig of scoundrels Alan and David fight their way free in the teeth of a raging storm and end up deposited alive but separated on the West coast of Scotland by the Isle of Mull. David now begins to follow a trail left by Alan, to allow them to meet safely in Alan’s homeland of Appin, avoiding the many troops in the area and followers of the Campbells, a clan who do not favour the likes of Alan Breck. Upon his way David is witness to the murder of the ‘Red Fox’, a prominent Campbell, and while fleeing this incident he meets with Alan. Together they then begin to make their way back to the city of Edinburgh to clear both their names of any connection with the murder, to allow David to settle scores at the House of Shaws and to get Alan safely aboard a ship for France. Getting back to the capital is no easy journey however, and they play a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the many English troops searching for them, avoiding capture by enduring much hardship in the highland glens, and by calling upon the good nature of many colourful characters on the way. Eventually they make it back to the city that was the start of this adventure. They meet with trusted allies and right the wrongs that brought them together.
