When Gemma Adair presents the islanders' petition to buy land to Sven Alexander, she is hopeful. Sven owns half of Genusay, and the islanders desperately need land if they are to save their farms from economic ruin—surely he will see reason.

But Sven's refusal to part with an acre of ground forces some islanders to talk of moving to the mainland. As head teacher of the island school, Gemma finds her position in jeopardy. The thought of being forced to leave the island she loves and the people she has fought to help leaves her heartbroken.
