沈尹默先生(一八八三—一九七一)是二十世纪最杰出的书法大家。之所以这样说,是因为与同时代的诸多书家相较,沈尹默是紧紧把握书法史上的主脉,最核心、最精良的二王一系『法脉』,而尽一生努力参究实践的书家。这条『法脉』自魏晋钟王至唐宋元诸大家传承以来,至二十世纪初,基本上湮没失传,因沈尹默得以恢复,并进而总结提高。所谓『法』,即书法之灵魂,最核心的技艺法则——笔法!沈先生毕生通过自学实践能透出此关,并将其科学笔法理论无私奉献于世人,实在是对中国书法史的重大贡献!

自古以来,书法家与善书者是不易辨别的。前人虽有『古之善书,往往不知笔法』之语,对于一般学者仍是懵懂难晓。沈先生云:书家必须是『谨守笔法』者,而善书者虽能写出丰神逸趣的好字,但以笔法较之,多有未合,即是善书而非书家。说明前人能写一笔好字者未必属于书家眷属。所谓『合』指内在手法的一致性、规律性,不关形貌之远近,书史上诸大家虽然书风迥异,却有其永不变易的『共法』,这就是趟松雪所说的『用笔千古不易』。善书者的书法,如岳飞的《前后出师表》草书,激昂振迅,若与怀素《苦笋帖》相较,其用笔手法就显得粗糙了不少,情性多而法度不『合』,即属善书。
