What if the first human story was never a story of the Fall?

For centuries, the Western imagination has pictured the beginning of humanity as an ending: a man and a woman walking out of Eden, and a guilt passed down to every child ever born.

Yet the same story — the same garden, the same tree, the same adversary — is told in another way, carried today by the faith of nearly a quarter of humanity. And it reaches almost opposite conclusions about what it means to be human.

In the Qur'anic account, the story begins not in a garden but with an announcement about the earth. Adam errs, owns his error without excuse, and is forgiven before he descends. No debt passes to his children. Every human being is born unindebted — and fully responsible.

Drawing on scripture, on classical scholars such as al-Ghazali and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, and on modern psychology, this book reads the stories of Iblis, of Adam and Eve, and of Cain and Abel as a map of the soul: how arrogance justifies itself, how a whisper becomes a habit, how envy makes the unthinkable easy — and what it takes to say, "I was wrong."

We did not inherit a sin. We inherited a soul, and the freedom to answer for it.
