Mr. Meggs has decided to end his life. Middle-aged, overweight, and dyspeptic, he finds that his ceaseless stomach agitation has become too much to bear. With no relatives or a family of his own, he plans to disperse his fortune among his former colleagues. Much to his own delight, he drafts six letters, each containing a banknote. He has even set aside a significant sum for Miss Pillenger, his loyal, austere secretary. Miss Pillenger's reaction to his generosity, however, is entirely unexpected.
