She was from Kingston, Ontario, Canada, although she didn't start out there. The small bundle of dreams and determination who wondered if she would ever get to travel grew into a teen who had the grit to get a job as a journalist so that she could graduate from high school...at a time when girls were girls, and they just didn't do things like that.

Seeking adventure, Kay joined the air force, but in those days, women of lower ranks were not allowed to drive vehicles—let alone fly airplanes. When women married, they were forced to leave the military. With her customary determination, Kay married, had two children, and embarked on a second career — as a military wife.

In this fascinating account, one thing leads to another. Kay does leave Kingston, she does travel, extensively, and she does learn to fly an airplane, along with a whole lot of other things — like working in Arctic oil exploration — that girls just didn't do.
