《博库丛刊：宋江三十六人考实》以《水浒传》前身《宣和遗事》所述宋江等三十六人横行河朔的故事为基础，追迹文献，弄清了《水浒传》主要人物的历史原型，并从文本、制度、地理、民俗等多方面，还宋江起义以历史真实。
《博库丛刊：宋江三十六人考实》以治史学的方法考索水浒故事之本事。其中对水浒故事近20人原型的考证，多与小说不相吻合，表明水浒故事是由宋江事附会而生，最初之36人，除宋江之外，难以一一坐实。本书是文学研究与史学研究相结合的典范之作。
