Mr. Sankara Warrier's this book is a pioneering attempt at a comprehensive study of the Guruvayur temple from all possible angles. He has utilized all available sources, primary and secondary, in reconstructing the chequered and colorful history of the temple from its legendary origins to the present day. The separate chapter on the historic Guruvayur Satyagraha,(1931-32) which captured all-India attention, should be of special interest to students of the Socio-political history of modern India. Mr. Warrier also sketches in detail the administrative history of the temple which is the richest of its kind in Kerala and attracts to its hallowed precincts the largest number of daily pilgrims. The description of the temple complex with details of the rituals and festivals should be of more than ordinary interest. The chapter dealing with the impact of Guruvayur in the fields of literature, arts and architecture is one of the most detailed accounts on the subject and should help to enlighten the reader on some of the vital aspects of Kerala culture.
