Wu Song (武松) returns intent on marrying his sister-in-law Pan Jinlian (潘金莲). Wang Po (王婆) arranges the match and demands a hundred taels. On the wedding day Wu Song suddenly exposes the truth about his brother's death. Pan Jinlian admits that Ximen Qing poisoned Wu Dalang (武大郎). Wu Song flies into a rage. He kills Wang Po at the table. He silences Pan Jinlian and then beheads her before the ancestral tablet. He recovers the eighty taels Wang Po had hidden. He comforts the frightened child Ying'er (迎儿). He flees by night, first to Zhang Qing's (张青) vegetable garden and later to join the outlaws at Liangshan (梁山). The neighbors are shocked and report the murders. The new magistrate Li Changqi (李昌期) orders an investigation. A reward is posted. The corpses remain unburied because Wu Song cannot be found. Meanwhile Chen Jingji (陈敬济) searches for Pan Jinlian's body. He learns that Zhang Sheng (张胜) and Li An (李安) from Zhou Shoubei's (周守备) household took charge of the corpse. Pang Chunmei (庞春梅) arranged the burial behind Yongfu Temple (永福寺) under a small poplar. Chen Jingji visits the grave. He offers sacrifices and vows to avenge her if he meets Wu Song. He also pays for rites for his late father Chen Hong (陈洪) and leads the family funeral. The household quarrels over Ximen Dajie (西门大姐). Chen Jingji treats her harshly and drives her away. She flees to Wu Yue-niang (吴月娘) and is sheltered there. On Qingming Wu Yue-niang visits Yongfu Temple and recognizes Pang Chunmei in splendid official dress. Pang Chunmei had come to mourn and had quietly buried Pan Jinlian. She kneels and greets Wu Yue-niang and presents a pair of gold hairpins to the child Xiaoge. The meeting is awkward and tense. Rumors about the killings, the hidden money, and Pang Chunmei's new favor with the garrison spread through the town. The episodes show how private vengeance, social status, and rumor collide. Ordinary people suffer the consequences. Loyalties shift under pressure and grief mixes with suspicion.
