This section traces the household turmoil set off by Wu Yue-niang (吴月娘) when she expels Pang Chunmei (庞春梅) and sends the maid Xiao Yu (小玉) with her. Xiao Yu secretly entrusts Pang Chunmei with jewelry and clothing so she can survive. Pang accepts fine dresses and about thirty taels of silver and takes leave amid Pan Jinlian s (潘金莲) sorrow. Chen Jingji (陈敬济) repeatedly tries to visit but is kept away. He bribes Xue Sao (薛嫂) to gain access and quarrels with Pang in private. Xue Sao then arranges an inspection and Zhou Shoubei (周守备) offers to take Pang. Xue Sao pockets much of the payment and Pang ends up as another household s possession. Chen Jingji grows sullen and idle. Wu Yue-niang s displeasure increases. Meng Yulou (孟玉楼) organizes a birthday feast that Chen is coaxed to attend. He drinks and publicly complains that he is treated as an outsider and that valuables brought home were misappropriated. Next day a jest about a child by Ruyi (如意) angers Wu Yue-niang. Sun Xue e (孙雪娥) and other matrons conspire. They ambush and beat Chen until he strips and flees. He seeks refuge with his maternal uncle Zhang Tuanlian (张团练). Meanwhile Wang Po (王婆) traffics in the sale of Pan Jinlian. Bidders appear. Ying Bojue (应伯爵) and Zhang Erguan (张二官) consider purchase but alarming stories make Zhang withdraw. Zhou Shoubei continues offers and Chen vows to raise funds. Wang Po raises her price. Pan is taken to Wang Po s house and there she and Wang Chao (王潮) conduct a secret liaison. Chen s efforts to recover Pan lead him to ride to the capital for money. At the close Wu Song (武松) returns to the county and learns Pan Jinlian is at Wang Po s. He calmly offers to marry her and care for Ying er (迎儿). The household s affairs become more entangled. Servant sales, secret deals and private vendettas intertwine with public bargaining. Personal grievances turn into broader struggles over honor, property and influence.
