Chen Jingji (陈敬济) and Pan Jinlian (潘金莲) carry on an illicit affair that is repeatedly exposed and concealed. On a stormy night Qiuju (秋菊) discovers them. She reports the incident to Wu Yuniang (吴月娘), but Xiao Yu (小玉) blocks her and she is beaten in retaliation. Humiliated and angry Qiuju vows to expose the lovers. Before the Mid Autumn festival Pan arranges for Pang Chunmei (庞春梅) to drug Qiuju so Chen can slip in at night. Wu Yuniang suspects irregularities. She opts to contain the scandal rather than publicize it. She orders night watches. She assigns Chen to keep a shop and closes the garden gate early. These measures keep outward appearances and make meetings harder. Pan grows more anxious and seeks other ways to meet Chen. Wu travels to Mount Tai (泰山) and is accosted by Yin Tianci (殷天赐). A monk shelters her in a cave. On the descent they are captured by bandits. Song Jiang (宋江) arrives and persuades the chiefs to free her. Back home Wu learns Pan has been meeting Chen. Pan becomes pregnant. Fearing exposure they consult Hu the physician (胡太医) who supplies an abortifacient. The fetus is expelled and discarded into the latrine. When the latrine worker later finds the formed male fetus the scandal spreads through the neighborhood. Neighbors gossip and household tensions mount. Chen flees to his uncle Zhang Tuanlian (张团练) to avoid confrontation. Pan resumes secret messages. Chen asks Xue Sao (薛嫂) to act as go-between. Xue Sao learns Wu intends to sell Pang Chunmei and tells Chen. The household agrees to sell Pang for silver. Pan laments while Pang declares she will not be subdued. Moved, Xiao Yu secretly gives Pang her jewelry and helps pack a few clothes. The sequence of exposure, concealment and violence deepens fissures in the household.
