He visits Li Ping'er (李瓶儿)'s courtyard and later dreams of her appearing as a warning. The dream unsettles him. Pan seeks a sable coat from Li Ping'er's chest to protect her face before guests. Wu Yue-niang (吴月娘) resists because of the coat's value. Ximen uses a key to take garments and rewards Ruyi. Li Guijie (李桂姐) comes to apologize and sings on the pipa. She later meets Ximen secretly. Guests arrive for Meng Yulou's birthday and Wang Sanguan (王三官) hosts festivities. Ying Bojue (应伯爵) and Mr Wen visit. Requests and favors circulate among them. A suggestion is made for Ximen to become a godfather. Ximen parts company uneasily and slips away from some encounters.
